Time to answer all your questions
We know that you are keen on knowing more about how the Scoring works and also the our new ranking. So, here we are explaining the whole thing.
The scoring has been, from day one, a matter of curiosity from our users — no matter how good anyone is, everybody wants to know how the score is given to a certain player. Why was this performance better or worse than the other?
And although in some cases, the answer is obvious, in others not so much. So, it’s time to clarify it — by the way, if you want to find out by yourself while playing, this is the moment where you should stop reading this!
Score:
1. The score for freestyle soccer is comprised of a lot more than just a count of the number of ball juggles! Much like in a real world competition, this score entails a number of different metrics:
2. Number of ball juggles (with different point systems for different parts of the body according to its difficulty)
3. Variety of ball juggles (you have to be creative!)
4. Speed
5. Rhythm
6. Height of ball variability
7. Novelty (compared to your previous attempts)
8. The score is also discounted if a hand or ground touch is detected
9. Currently we do not support special tricks (such as an around the world) as these need to be evaluated very carefully and are difficult to extrapolate from the data we have — and particularly if the camera’s resolution or frame rate is a little lower
Also please be mindful — our app is in beta mode! We have plans to update the scoring methodology if we see a lot of examples that do not look quite right so stay tuned as we may ask for your help!
Ranking
Later last year, we felt the need to improve our ranking system and follow a different methodology. This generated some confusion to some users firstly because it took the system a while to process all the data and update the whole ranking, and secondly because it uses different aspects than adding the score of each game played. Our idea is to properly distinguish the level of skills and reward or penalize certain actions.
So, here’s the full thing:
10. The ranking system is an extension of the Elo Ranking methodology
11. With this method everyone starts with a baseline score and they move up or down according to their performance
12. Beating a player with a much higher rank than yourself yield more points to your ranking
13. Beating someone with a lower rank still counts but less so — we expect higher ranking players to be good!
14. Same goes for losing, if you lose against someone with a much higher ranking your points are less affected
15. Now the way we have extended the Elo ranking system takes into account time and how consistent the player is. This means that besides who you play against, the ranking system takes into account how much you have played in the past and how consistent you have been
16. This also means we update the rankings every hour — so your latest results can take up to 1 hour to update your global ranking!
So in general — don’t look at the amount of videos each player has, as this is not what counts! We want people to play and challenge themselves by playing against other very good players — this also means that if you’re at the top you need to stay sharp, as your fellow challengers are coming for that spotlight!
